Met Ball 2015 Best Dressed

Monday evening saw the worlds of fashion, art and entertainment collide with the annual fundraising Costume Institute Gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

This year the Met Ball honoured the new fashion exhibition "China: Through the Looking Glass" (running from May 7th - August 16th 2015), and as expected Anna Wintour's dress code left ample opportunity for guests to impress on the red carpet with intricate embroidery, rich colours and beautiful jewellery. As ever there were jaw-dropping looks aplenty, from the ludicrously over-the-top to the understated and stunning, but even from both ends of the spectrum it was yet again a wonderful evening for the fashion world.

After all, the Met Ball is known as the fashion Oscars for a reason!

Vogue itself called this year "thematically tricky" and I couldn't agree more! The red carpet was pretty divided, from those that adhered to the theme to the letter and almost treated the evening as an incredibly expensive fancy dress party; those that gave subtle nods to the theme; and those that barely paid any attention to it and just wore whatever they wanted. I admire those that went all out - if there's ever the time to prove your fashion credentials and think outside the box then it's the Met Ball - but I'm much more of a fan of the simpler looks that hinted at Wintour's dress code. It might have been a difficult year but as many successfully proved it was possible to exude class and glamour while still making bold sartorial choices.

My Best Dressed list is below, and as ever it's mostly down to personal taste. I absolutely cannot abide by the sheer fabric and strategically placed sequins trend (yes, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, I'm talking about you...) as I think it's horrendously tacky, so although many of those looks are at the top of most other BD lists, they're not here at all. I've included millions of looks below, but if you fancy checking out more comprehensive lists of every single look from the evening then you can't go wrong with these: Buzzfeed; Harpers Bazaar; Vogue; Who What Wear; ELLE; Buzzfeed.

They may not have made my final list, but I applaud these ladies who adhered wonderfully to the theme:

SARAH JESSICA PARKER // H&M dress, Philip Treacy hat, Cindy Chao & Jennifer Fisher jewellery
LADY GAGA // Balenciaga
GEORGIA MAY JAGGER // Gucci
CHLOE SEVIGNY // J. W. Anderson

COURTNEY EATON // Dolce & Gabbana
KAREN ELSON // Dolce & Gabbana
TABITHA SIMMONS // Dolce & Gabbana

With the dress to end all dresses, Rihanna dominated the red carpet and steps of the Met in this enormous - and frankly ridiculous - Guo Pei gown and Cartier jewellery. It's already launched a thousand memes and deservedly so! It's bold, bonkers, and while I utterly despise the gown I have a an awful lot of respect for Rihanna for wearing it.

So from the bizarre to the beautiful...

BEST DRESSED WOMAN: BEE SHAFFER

Being the daughter of the formidable Anna Wintour obviously has its advantages with the Met Ball as Bee Shaffer stole the show in this stunning custom burgundy embroidered Alexander McQueen gown. It's incredibly classy and well within the dress code: such a dynamic and show-stopping look!

BEST DRESSED MAN: MICHAEL B. JORDAN

I love this! Michael B. Jordan looked incredible in this flower-printed black Dolce & Gabbana Alla Sartoria suit. Men can often be overlooked at these sorts of events, but Joran proves that they deserve just as much attention as the women.

Red and gold were clearly the key colours of the evening, and Dolce & Gabbana were obviously the go-to designers for beautifully intricate embellished gowns. Despite it being a more difficult year than normal I think many still triumphed, and wonderfully so.

Who was your Best Dressed of the evening? Are you a fan of the subtler looks like me, or were the sartorial choices from the likes of Rihanna and Beyoncé more up your street? Do let me know in the comments below!
